G20 Park in New Delhi: Celebrating Unity through Wildlife Sculptures

In a delightful fusion of art and international diplomacy, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to inaugurate the G20 Park in Chanakyapuri on Monday. This unique park showcases sculptures of the national birds and animals of the G20 member nations, offering a symbol of unity and sustainability.

The park adheres to the waste-to-art theme, where discarded metal scraps have been ingeniously transformed into captivating sculptures. The park’s creation is part of an extensive revamp effort for the G20 Summit scheduled for September 9-10.

A team of artists from the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi embarked on this creative journey back in April, crafting these remarkable sculptures that represent each of the G20 nations. The installations were ready by July, and since then, meticulous landscaping work and sculpture placement have been underway.

According to an NDMC official, the G20 Park will serve as a testament to “sustainability through representations from each of the G20 nations.” The theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future” (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) underscores the concept of togetherness on the path of development.

Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi, V Nagdas, highlighted the craftsmanship behind these sculptures, stating that “each sculpture has been handcrafted and is a testimony to the fact that waste can be turned into wonderful objects.”

Notably, the creative spirit extended to students from universities across the National Capital Region (NCR), with approximately 50 students volunteering to contribute to the sculpture-making process. Each sculpture is accompanied by an information plate providing details about the bird or animal, its country of origin, and the artist who crafted it.

The raw materials for this eco-friendly artistry were sourced from NDMC warehouses, utilizing items like iron bars, automobile parts, metal plates, and wire mesh. The park also offers selfie points, adding a touch of interactive fun.

Among the remarkable wildlife featured in the park are the Indian peacock, American bison, Brazilian jaguar, red-crowned crane from China, Saudi Arabian camel, Korean magpie, Australian emu, Canadian gray jay, Russian brown bear, and Mexican golden eagle.
