Barbenheimer box office: Oppenheimer and Barbie together earn ₹100 crore in India

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer released on the same day in India July 21. In its first week at the Indian box office, both the Hollywood films grossed a combined ₹100.6 million, according to Sacnilk.com. After seven days of release, the inextricably linked Barbie and Oppenheimer, collectively called Barbenheimer, grossed ₹27.5 million nett and ₹73.15 million nett respectively.

Barbenheimer box office numbers

Oppenheimer performed well in its first six days at the box office, grossing ₹67.9 million nett in India, according to Sacnilk.com. On Thursday, the 7th day of its release in India, the Cillian Murphy starrer earned ₹5.25 crore nett, taking its first week collection to ₹73.15 crore. The film stars Cillian Murphy as American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, who led the development of the atomic bomb.

Meanwhile, on day 7 of its release, Barbie earned ₹2 crore nett in India, as reported by Sacnilk.com, taking its total first week collection to ₹27.5 crore nett. Directed by Greta Gerwig, it features Margot Robbie as a “stereotypical” version of the famous doll. The film also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Oppenheimer and Barbie box office records

Since its release on July 21, Barbie has broken several box office records, including the biggest opening of 2023. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer had the biggest global opening for a biopic. Together, Barbie and Oppenheimer grossed over $511 million worldwide and $235.5 million in the US in its first weekend.

According to a report by Deadline, Barbie has already surpassed the lifetime earnings of many other female-led films. It also holds the record for the biggest US opening for a film directed by a woman, surpassing Captain Marvel’s $153.4 million. The film is also the top grosser of 2023 at $70.8 million.

Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s third highest-grossing opening weekend ever, both worldwide and in the US. It is also said to be Christopher Nolan’s biggest non-superhero opening weekend in 55 markets, including UK & Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Spain and Brazil, as well as the biggest opening day for a Christopher Nolan film in 33 markets, including Saudi Arabia , United Arab Emirates, India, Netherlands, Argentina and Belgium.
