Heavy Monsoon Rains: ICSE and CBSE Schools Shut in Four Kerala Districts -Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Malappuram

A holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges in four districts of Kerala on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thundershowers at most places in the state from July 23 to July 26. A holiday has been declared for Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Malappuram districts.

In separate statements, the district collectors said that vocational colleges and schools under ICSE and CBSE would also be closed on Tuesday. On Monday too, all educational institutions there were closed due to the forecast of heavy rains.

A holiday for schools has also been declared in Vellarikund and Hosdurg taluks of Kasaragod district. However, colleges in the two taluks will remain open. There is also no change in the Kannur University PSC exams, the statement said. Students were advised to stay away from flooded areas.

After a brief lull, heavy rains lashed various parts of Kerala, with central and northern districts facing the wrath of the monsoon.

The Met department has issued a yellow alert for nine districts of the state – Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kasaragod besides Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur.

Three people killed in Kerala

News agency PTI reported that three people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents on Sunday. Two minor boys, Hadhi and Hashir from Wayanad district, lost their lives on Sunday after they allegedly fell into a water body while on their way to classes. A youth drowned in Thrissur district.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority said several relief camps have been opened in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod districts and 38 people have been accommodated in them so far.

The authority also said there were numerous cases of trees being felled across the state and damage to houses and other buildings.

In its weather forecast, the Met department has predicted light/moderate to heavy rains at several places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala till July 27.
