As many as 86 people have been killed and 151 others injured in the recent monsoon rains since June 25, Pakistan‘s ARY News reported, citing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The NDMA said in its report that six people died and nine others were injured in heavy rains across Pakistan in the last 24 hours, according to ARY News.
According to NDMA data, 86 deaths and 151 injuries have been reported so far, including 16 women and 37 children. As many as 97 houses have also been damaged as torrential rain continues to ravage the country.
The highest number of people died in Punjab, where 52 people died in heavy rains. Meanwhile, 20 people died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and six lost their lives in Balochistan, according to an NDMA report, ARY News reported.
In April this year, the NDMA predicted that there is a 72 percent chance of devastating floods in Pakistan in 2023. Briefing the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider said that rapid rise in temperature, melting of glaciers and early monsoon may result in floods, ARY News reported.
Haider said that NDMA and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change are monitoring 17 satellites and 36 flood early warning systems have been deployed. He noted that Pakistan would end up in a huge economic crisis if catastrophic floods like last year happened now, the report said.
Two roofs collapsed in Azhar Town and Shahdara Town in Lahore during the ongoing spell of rain in Pakistan’s Punjab, injuring at least nine people, Pakistan-based Dawn reported on Saturday. According to the rescue agency, no significant injuries are reported, Dawn reported.
All the injured people were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, the report said. Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed visited the control center of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) where he was told about the imminent danger of river flooding.
