Heavy rain to continue over North: Landslides in Himachal, schools closed in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram

Heavy rain will continue to lash northern India, with the capital on Sunday seeing its highest one-day rainfall in 40 years. The combined impact of an active monsoon trough and western disturbance will bring more showers next week, although the intensity will vary. The India Meteorological Department in its evening bulletin said that the low pressure area is also lying over southwest Rajasthan and Delhi.

Delhi received 153 mm of rainfall till 8:30 am on Sunday, the highest since July 1982. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that all schools would remain closed on Monday due to two days of incessant rain in the capital. The level of the Jamuna river is expected to cross the danger mark of 205.33 meters by Tuesday. With parts of Delhi paralyzed due to a two-day spell of heavy rain that left Connaught Place waterlogged, all government officials’ leaves were canceled on Sunday.

“Delhi received 126 mm rainfall yesterday. 15 per cent of the total monsoon rainfall fell in just 12 hours. People were very agitated due to water leakage. Today all ministers and Delhi mayor will inspect the problem areas. Officers of all departments have been instructed to cancel Sunday holidays and got to the spot,” Kejriwal tweeted earlier in the day.

Schools in Noida will also remain closed on Monday due to heavy rain, the district administration said. Schools in Ghaziabad, Faridabad are also closed on Mondays.
