The Supreme Court comes up with a new procedure for mentioning cases for urgent inclusion in the benches

The Supreme Court has come up with a fresh notification on the procedure to be adopted by CJI D Y Chandrachud for mentioning cases for their urgent listing and hearing from July 3.

The Supreme Court is due to reopen on July 3 after the summer break.

“Various new matters which are verified on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday will automatically be listed on the following Monday,” the Supreme Court said in its circular issued on June 28 by the secretaries of judicial administration.

The circular also said that lawyers who want to list verified new matters before the dates so allotted will now have to submit their pro forma mentions by 3 pm to have their cases heard the next day.

For those seeking same-day listing, the proforma must be submitted by 10:30 a.m. to the said officer along with an urgent letter, he said. The CJI will then take the call at the same place during lunch or “as required”, he said.

In the case of post-notice and regular hearing matters to be listed urgently, lawyers must first go before the said officer with a pro forma and urgent letter.

It stated: “No mentions other than those in the mention lists uploaded the day before are allowed for such matters.”

As per the procedures, lawyers and litigants can mention their cases for listing and hearing out of sequence by citing the ground of urgency before the CJI.

Recently, the SC also announced a new list for allotment of new cases to 15 benches from July 3 and the first three courts headed by the CJI and two chief justices will hear PILs.
