Cyclone Biparjoy LIVE: Cyclone weakens in Gujarat over 20 injured, power cuts in 940 municipalities

Cyclone Biparjoy, which means “disaster” in Bengali, has now weakened. Biparjoy was downgraded from ‘very severe’ to ‘strong’ after the storm made landfall in the coastal areas of Gujarat on Thursday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone has now moved from sea to land and is targeting Sauarashtra-Kutch, adding that heavy rains are expected in Rajasthan on Friday.

Imapct of Cyclone Biparjoy will continue in Gujarat

According to the weather channel, Cyclone Biparjoy will continue to affect the regional weather in the next 24-48 hours and will cause extremely heavy rains over parts of North Gujarat and South Rajasthan.

Cyclone Biparjoy leaves a trail of destruction in Kachchh, Jakhau and Dwarka

Cyclone Biparjoy: Howling winds uprooted hundreds of trees, damaged communication towers, toppled electricity poles, hurled solid objects and triggered dust storms that reduced visibility to near zero in the coastal areas of Gujarat – Kachchh, Jakhau and Dwarka on Thursday. Many areas were plunged into darkness due to power outages. However, no loss of life has been reported so far.

Cyclone Biparjoy: 23 animals killed, over 500 trees uprooted

Due to gusty winds and heavy rains, 23 animals were killed and 524 trees were uprooted and several power poles were damaged in Gujarat, cutting off power to 940 villages.

Cyclone Biparjoy: Intensity decreases to 105-115 km/h

The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy has decreased to 105-115 km/h. Now its category has changed to strong cyclonic storm. Rajasthan may experience heavy rains on June 16, said IMD director Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Cyclone Biparjoy impact: 22 reported injured, 940 villages face power cut

No loss of life has been reported so far. Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey said around 22 people were injured, 23 animals were killed and 524 trees were reported uprooted.

Damage to electric poles has also been reported in some places, due to which 940 villages have lost electricity and are at risk of blackout, he added.
