Pakistan’s Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel has sparked controversy after declaring that former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s “mental stability is questionable” and claiming that a sample of his urine showed signs of toxic chemicals such as alcohol and cocaine. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) said it had decided to take legal action against Patel and his aides over claims related to the party chairman’s health.
Addressing a press conference on Friday on Khan’s medical reports issued after samples were taken at the premier Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) following his arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case on May 9, Patel said: “This is your prime minister, who a five-member panel of senior doctors says , that his mental stability is questionable. There was some inappropriate gesture.”
He added that the 70-year-old Khan’s medical report would be shown to the nation as it was a “public document”.
“The medical report says that when Imran and I spoke at length, his actions were not that of a healthy man,” Dawn News quoted the minister as saying.
Patel also claimed that the original report on Khan’s urine sample revealed findings of toxic chemicals “like alcohol and cocaine”.
PTI said the decision was taken after Khan’s approval and its legal team led by advocate Abuzar Salman Niazi has started preparations.
“Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel’s disgraceful press conference. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s decision to take full legal action against the Health Minister and his assistants. Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan approved the arraignment of Abdul Qadir Patel, NAB, Ministry of Health and doctors from Pims hospital to court.
Tehreek-e-Insaaf chairman’s legal team led by advocate Abuzar Salman Niazi has started preparations. Abdul Qadir Patel’s embarrassing press conference and baseless allegations will be dealt with under other laws including defamation,” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf wrote on Twitter.
Patel also claimed that the report did not include any details about Khan’s leg fracture, which the former prime minister claimed to have suffered after the November 3 assassination. “Imran Khan had a cast on his leg for about five to six months, but the medical report showed no fracture,” he added.
