India has a renewable energy capacity of 172 GW, 129 MW under implementation

India has already reached 172 GW of renewable energy capacity and another 129 MW is being installed, a top official said. New and Renewable Energy Minister BS Bhalla mentioned the capacity on Tuesday at a review meeting with states/UTs on the progress of renewable energy schemes and capacities in the national capital.

According to him, the total installed power would be 301 GW, to reach the goal of 500 GW of power from non-fossil fuels, about 200 GW of power remains to be added.

Bhagwanth Khuba, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Chemicals and Fertilizers chaired the review meeting.

Among others, the principal secretaries (energy) / secretaries for energy, new and renewable energy from the states / UTs participated in the evaluation meeting.

During the meeting, Bhalla emphasized that the role of states is becoming critical and they must facilitate the installation of renewable power plants by providing infrastructure. Khuba emphasized that the energy sector plays a major role in deciding India’s future.

The Department of Energy and the Department of New and Renewable Energy are working together on a number of initiatives, including increasing transmission capacity.

The meeting reviewed the progress of various programs, including the rooftop solar program and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
