Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday announced a new WhatsApp feature called “Chat Lock” to make users’ most intimate conversations even more private.
This feature allows you to password protect your most intimate conversations and secure them in a separate folder. When someone sends you a message and you have this chat locked, the sender’s name and message content will also be hidden.
Zuckerberg’s announcement read: “We’re excited to bring you a new feature we’re calling Chat Lock that lets you protect your most intimate conversations with an extra layer of security.”
“Locking a chat removes that thread from your inbox and stores it in its own folder that can only be accessed using your device’s password or biometrics like your fingerprint. It will also automatically hide the content of that chat in notifications,” he added.
To describe the need for this feature, Mark said: “We think this feature will be great for people who have a reason to share their phones with a family member from time to time, or when someone else is holding your phone just as they come strange chat. You can lock a chat by tapping the name of a personal contact or group and selecting the lock option. To detect these chats, slowly download your inbox and enter your phone password or biometrics.”
“Over the next few months, we’ll be adding more chat lock options, including locking for companion devices, creating a custom password for your chats so you can use a unique password different from your phone password,” concluded Meta’s CEO.
Whatsapp’s official Twitter handle followed up the statement by officially announcing the feature later in the day.
“The privacy feature just went down. With Chat Lock, you can now keep your most private and personal conversations under lock and key with a password,” WhatsApp said in a tweet.
