Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal confirmed that she left the show in March, alleging that producers Sohil Ramani and Asit Modi sexually assaulted her. She claimed that she had been doing such acts for a long time, but she endured them in the hope that she would get better with time.
Jennifer portrayed the role of Anjali, Roshan’s wife in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. After Disha Vakani and Shailesh Lodha, the latest from the team is a popular comedy show that has been running for more than a decade, which speaks against the makers.
Insisting that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah gave her all the money, name and popularity she enjoys today, Jennifer told ETimes that she believes people need to know what she has been through. “There were several incidents where he (Asit) tried to flirt with me and made sexual advances…There was also one incident where he called me ‘sexy’ and pulled my face. I have filed a case against Asita Kumarra for sexual harassment. Modi, Sohail Ramani and Jatin Bajaj.”
Jennifer added, “Every person on Taarak Mehta is a hired hand. There have been many incidents in the past and I let it go thinking that things will change. Khoon ka ghoont peekar I ignored. I didn’t want to leave the show during my pregnancy, but they fired me because Gurucharan Singh (her on-screen husband) left.
She added that she even suggested alternate storylines and asked several times not to be fired. She also said she was ready to work until she was nine months pregnant, but was fired instead.
Reacting to the allegations, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah project leader Sohil Ramani spoke in an interview to Hindustan Times. He said that the production house terminated Jennifer’s contract three months ago. “He has been working with us for 15 years on the set of mein bohot saare utar chadhav hote hai (there are many ups and downs during the shoot). We ignored her qualities like creating rifts among others, arriving two hours late to the shoot, creating misunderstandings. We have a lot of evidence against her,” he said.
He added: “We have a women’s committee, why has she never complained to the committee? All of us have never even stepped into a make-up artist’s room. He’s playing the female card.”
