Cyclone “Mocha” is likely to intensify as a very strong cyclonic storm today

The India Meteorological Department said the severe cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ will intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm on Friday and head towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.

“SCS ‘Mocha’ lay centered at 0230 hrs IST on 12 May 2023 over the south-east adjoining Central Bay of Bengal about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair,” the IMD tweeted in the wee hours of Friday.

The name of the cyclone “Mocha” was suggested by Yemen and was named after the Red Sea port city known to have introduced coffee to the world.

Here are the top five updates on the upcoming severe cyclonic storm.

1. On Thursday night, the IMD tweeted: “Severe cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ lay centered at 2330 hrs IST on 11 May 2023 over the south-east adjoining Central BoB near Lat 12.7N, Long 88.1E, about 510 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1050 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 970 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar).”

2. Due to weather conditions, North Eastern states of Tripura and Mizoram are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Saturday. On the other hand, rainfall is expected in Nagaland, Manipur and south Assam on Sunday.

3. The National Disaster Relief Force has deployed eight teams, with 200 rescuers on site and 100 rescuers on standby.

4. The IMD asked fishermen, boats, boats and trawlers not to venture into the central and northeastern Bay of Bengal and the northern Andaman Sea till Sunday. Those sailing in the central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea are advised to return to the coast.

5. On Wednesday, the Indian Coast Guard also issued a warning to fishermen advising them not to venture into the sea. “Safety alerts initiated by @IndiaCoastGuard on routine air raids around #AndamanSea low pressure areas. Fishermen shepherded/advised not to venture into #Sea and return to shore,” the Indian Coast Guard tweeted.
