As many as 40 tourists stranded near Nathula in Sikkim due to heavy rains have been rescued by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), officials said on Tuesday. “In yet another BRO rescue operation, BRO Karmayogies rescued 40 tourists who were stranded near Nathula due to heavy rains,” an official statement by Guwahati Defense PRO said.
According to the BRO, the rescued people were given warm meals and shelter in the BRO quarters and were sent back to Gangtok after the BRO opened the road. “This selfless dedication is the hallmark of BRO under the able leadership of their Director General Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry,” it added.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the ongoing rain in Sikkim and other parts of the Northeast will intensify for the next five days. Scattered to fairly widespread light to light to moderate rains along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds will continue to lash Northeast India from Monday to next Friday (May 1 to 5), according to the IMD.
