NASA’s strategy for lunar and Mars exploration and codify the supporting architecture

As NASA creates a blueprint for human exploration of the entire solar system for the benefit of humanity, the agency released the results of its first Architecture Concept Review on Tuesday, a robust analytical process designed to align NASA’s strategy for lunar and Mars exploration and codify the supporting architecture.

“Our first revision of the architectural concept is a milestone that will help our Moon-to Mars strategy develop near-term and long-term mission goals,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.

Written for a highly technical audience, the NASA Architecture Definition document and associated summaries provide a deep dive into the approach and process of NASA’s Moon-to Mars architecture development. Six supporting white papers also address frequently discussed survey architecture topics.

“NASA now has a goal-based foundation on which to build our current and future exploration plans,” said Cathy Koerner, deputy associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Our approach is designed to ensure that exploration of the Moon and Mars is preserved.”

NASA’s process responds to a call by Vice President Harris, as chairman of the National Space Council, to develop a plan for an initial lunar surface architecture that includes commercial and international partnerships.

The agency’s Moon to Mars architecture represents the hardware and operations required for human missions to the Moon and Mars and how they work together as a system.

The architecture is not a mission, a manifesto, or a set of requirements, but defines the elements rockets, spacecraft, rovers, spacesuits, communications relays, and more—that will be progressively developed and delivered to the Moon and Mars over a long period of time. term, human-led scientific discovery in deep space.

NASA released its revised 2022 Moon to Mars goals to guide the agency’s approach to lunar-to Mars exploration to help NASA’s space investments, as well as those of the agency’s industry and international space agency partners, toward the Moon and beyond.

They cover four broad areas: science; transport and housing; lunar and martian infrastructure; and operations. The goals were informed by input from US industry, international space agencies, NASA personnel and others.

The agency began developing its Definition of Architecture document in late 2022 as a detailed look at how current goals are distilled into specific architectural elements. The agency plans annual revisions of architectural concepts to incorporate new technological capabilities and evolving goals. These missions established a long-term presence to inform future exploration of Mars and other potential destinations in the solar system.
