Oscars 2023: Ram Charan, Jr NTR, SS Rajamouli pay tribute to India on red carpet

Director SS Rajamouli, actors Jr NTR and Ram Charan and singer MM Keeravani graced the Oscars 2023 red carpet before attending the awards ceremony where their song ‘Naatu Naatu’ is nominated in the ‘Original Song’ category. A fictional pre-independence story, ‘RRR’ (Rise Roar Revolt) follows two real-life Indian revolutionaries – Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) – in the 1920s.

‘RRR’ director SS Rajamouli represented the country on the global stage in a traditional dhoti with a purple silk kurta. Its leading men Ram Charan and Jr NTR wore black velvet bandhgalas with bold embroidery reminiscent of their characters in ‘RRR’.

Ram Charan and Jr NTR teamed up in a black ethnic velvet bandhgala. Rajamouli opted for a kurta which he paired with a dhoti. The trio undoubtedly paid homage to Indian culture.

Charan – whose character Alluri Sitarama Raju was described as a soldier in the British Indian Army – wore a similar medal on his bandhgala brooch. He was accompanied by wife and businesswoman Upasana Konidela, who looked dazzling in white. Jr NTR’s sherwani celebrated the majestic tiger with which his character Komaram Bheem shares a face in “RRR”.

The delicate gold embroidery on the black velvet of the traditional bandhgala drew parallels to the national animal of India – the Tiger. It’s also an ode to the iconic interval scene from RRR. So fitting is this symbolic attire for the Young Tiger, the moniker popularly used for NTR Jr.

The clothes were custom made for the global icon with his feelings in mind. The bandhgala was paired with Brue & Bareskin leather shoes and a Vacheron Constantin watch.

Ram Charan was present on the red carpet with his wife Upasana Kamineni. He said he had a fanboy moment on the carpet and was nervous before the awards. “She (Upasana) is also six months pregnant; I think the baby already brings us so much happiness… from the Golden Globes to standing here!”

The song ‘Naatu Naatu’ by S.S. Rajamouli’s Oscar-nominated RRR will also feature singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava in their Oscar debut at the 95th Academy Awards. Along with choreographer Prem Rakshith, “Naatu Naatu” singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava also walked the red carpet to perform the Telugu chartbuster on the Oscars stage.

Sipligunj wore a metallic gray kurta with cigarette pants and white shoes, Bhairava and Rakshith wore black outfits.

Before entering the Oscars, the song collected awards on the global stage. In January, ‘Naatu Naatu’ won the Golden Globe for ‘Best Original Song’. Five days later, ‘RRR’ won two more awards at the 28th Critics Choice Awards. One is for Best Song and the other is for “Best Foreign Language Film”. Since then, ‘RRR’ and ‘Naatu Naatu’ have been high on the global charts.
