Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on Australia’s batsmen after the visitors kept India at bay in Ahmedabad

The fourth Test between India and Australia was a tough grind for the bowlers for a change. While the previous three matches of the series all suited the spinners and were bowled over in two-and-a-half days, Australia kept India on the pitch for much of the first two days in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad. The visitors ended up with a mammoth 480 and India closed the day on 36/0.

Australia’s innings was boosted by a 208-run stand between Cameron Green and Usman Khawaja. Both players scored a century, their first against India, while it was 23-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green’s first ever in Test cricket.

Green scored 114 off 170 balls while Khawaja fell after scoring 180 off a whopping 422 balls. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who dismissed Green to end the big stand, said the big sum the all-rounder fetched in the 2023 Indian Premier League auction shows how highly he is valued in Indian cricket circles.

“I hope you tuned in to the IPL auction. It just tells you how the Indian cricket fraternity rates Cameron Green,” he said when asked by one of Australia’s scribes after Friday’s play. Green was snapped up by Mumbai Indians for ₹17.5 crore, making him the most expensive Australian in IPL history.

“I think he’s a fantastic player. Just the raw material he’s got, tall, beautiful leverage, good batting sense, can hit the deck hard when bowling, moves quite well; those are once-in-a-generation cricketers.” talk about it,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin then noted that countries like England and Australia do a better job of protecting a player like Green. “However, we come from different countries, India is very different. We cannot protect such players for long. In India, it is either perform or perish. In countries like Australia and England, these cricketers are very well groomed.” Expect Cameron Green to be a great cricketer,” Ashwin said.

Green, who has developed a reputation for big hitting in his short T20 International career opening the batting for Australia, gave the visitors’ effort a much-needed boost at the end of the first day by scoring at a higher rate. He then holed out with Khawaja to ensure India had a wicketless first two sessions on Day 2. His innings included 18 boundaries.
