Huge dinosaur footprint over three feet long found in Yorkshire, UK

A major palaeontological find in Yorkshire, UK has caused excitement among scientists around the world – a nearly meter long (3.3 ft) footprint of a large (probably carnivorous) dinosaur turned up in Burniston Bay near the town of Scarborough on what is being described as the British ” dinosaur coast”. The footprint is believed to be the largest of its kind in the region and will be displayed in the city’s rotunda museum.

According to the US television channel , local researcher Marie Woods found the footprint in April 2021. “I couldn’t believe what I was looking at… I had to do it twice. When I was outside, I saw several smaller prints.” with friends, but nothing like that. I can’t say anymore that archaeologists don’t do dinosaurs,” Woods told a local news channel.

She got in touch with regional fossil experts, but no one knew the track she was describing. Then she turned to Dr Dean Lomax, a palaeontologist and honorary visiting scientist at the University of Manchester. “Marie contacted me when she was down on the beach with the fossil in front of her,” Lomax, who co-authored the study with Woods, published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society. Lomax is also the author of ‘Dinosaurs of the British Isles’.

Scientists who studied the track Woods found concluded that it was probably made by a giant carnivore like Megalosaurus. Lomax said the shape of the print and the way the claws dug into the ground suggested it was sitting or crouching before it stood up.

“The most interesting feature of our footprint is a long section preserved at the back of the foot, an impression of what we call a metapodium. The presence could indicate that our large meat eater squatted in the mud before standing up.” and go away.”

According to local geologist John Hudson, the discovery is further evidence that carnivorous dinosaurs roamed this part of the world during the Jurassic period. Megalosaurus – if the print belongs to it – was one of the largest predators of its time. It had a large skull armed with sharp, jagged teeth and its body measured between eight and nine meters (between 26 and 29 feet) in length.
