The death toll from the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria will “double or more” from the current 28,000, UN humanitarian aid chief Martin Griffiths told Sky News. Arriving in the southern Turkish town of Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of the first quake, Martin Griffiths said: “I think it’s hard to estimate exactly how much we need to get under the rubble, but I’m sure it will double or more.”
“We haven’t actually started counting the number of dead yet, Soon people from search and rescue will make way for humanitarian agencies, whose task is to care for extraordinary numbers of victims in the coming months” he said.
While the official death toll from the earthquake now stands at 24,617 in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria, tens of thousands of rescuers continued to search for survivors in the rubble.
The United Nations earlier warned that at least 870,000 people were in urgent need of warm meals in Turkey and Syria, and up to 5.3 million people could be made homeless in Syria alone.
