NEET: Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam stage walkout from Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: On Friday, on the issue of the NEET Exemption Bill, Congress (INC), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and other opposition party leaders staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha. The walkout was staged in protest against Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s move to return the NEET Exemption Bill. The Opposition leaders demanded him to recall his decision immediately.

Tiruchi Siva, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP from Tamil Nadu, and his party members walked into the Well of the House, while strongly raising the issue in the Upper House of the Parliament.

The matter was raised during the ‘Zero Hour’ of the Rajya Sabha. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party members said that the NEET Exemption Bill was unanimously passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. They further alleged that the actions of the Governor was against the will and decision of the people of Tamil Nadu. DMK members wanted to speak on the issue and hence, kept insisting, but M Venkaiah Naidu, the Rajya Sabha Chairman did not allow them to speak. In the ‘Zero Hour’, he asked them to return back to their respective seats and let others speak.

Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge, the ‘Leader of Opposition’ had requested the chairman to allow the members to speak and put forward their concerns. As the Chairman did not accept the request of letting the DMK members speak, Mallikarjun Kharge announced walkout. Following Kharge, opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and others chose to walk out of the Rajya Sabha.

DMK members have been demanding the government to call back RN Ravi, the Tamil Nadu Governor.

A similar situation was witnessed on Thursday in the Lower House of the Parliament, when the House Members from Tamil Nadu had staged a walkout from Lok Sabha. The members were demanding the immediate recall of the Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, and were protesting against his decision to return the NEET Exemption Bill.
