Suspect Huu Can Tran in California killed himself in a van in a mass shooting

A man wanted in connection with a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California during the Lunar New Year is dead, apparently by suicide, Los Angeles police said Sunday. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said police tracked down the wanted van and as officers approached, they heard a single gunshot from the van.

“The suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene,” Luna said. The man has been named as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. “I can confirm that there are no suspects in the mass shooting incident,” Luna said, adding that the motive for the attack, which left 10 dead, was not yet known.

“The investigation is ongoing. Sheriff’s homicide detectives are continuing to gather additional information and work to determine a motive for this extremely tragic event,” he said.
