The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidelines for those who contract the Covid virus as new variants spread in several countries. The health agency said it had updated its guidance on “mask wearing in community settings, treatment of Covid-19 and clinical care”. The WHO has also urged everyone to continue wearing masks and taking booster doses of Covid vaccines to stop the spread of the virus.

1. The WHO said: “Without testing, for symptomatic patients, the new guidelines suggest 10 days of isolation from the date of onset of symptoms.”
2. Earlier guidelines stated that symptomatic Covid patients could be discharged 10 days after the onset of symptoms, along with vigilance for at least 3 days after symptoms resolved.
3. The WHO said that if a Covid patient has a negative result with a rapid antigen-based test, they can be released from isolation early.
4. “Asymptomatic patients with Covid or individuals who have tested positive for the virus but are not experiencing any symptoms should be isolated for 5 days,” the WHO said.
5. The World Health Organization has advised people to use masks and emphasized that it is a useful prevention tool. WHO said that people should wear ask in the following situations:
-If someone has been recently exposed to Covid
-When someone has or is suspected of having Covid
-When someone is at high risk of serious illness from Covid
-Anyone in a crowded, confined or poorly ventilated space
6. The WHO also said it has expanded its strong recommendation for the use of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (also known by the trade name “Paxlovid”).
