Cold wave warning for Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh: IMD

Severe cold waves continue to prevail in northwest India and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Monday in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. According to the meteorological agency, a cold to very cold day is forecast in Punjab, Haryana and UP, while a severe cold wave is forecast in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, several schools across the states have extended their vacations in view of the weather conditions.

Here are the latest updates:

1. In view of the cold conditions, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday evening issued a revised notification regarding school holidays in the state. According to the announcement, all schools up to the 8th grade will remain closed until January 14. The notification also said that online classes will be conducted for students of classes 9 to 12 and in case the classes are not held for any reason, a holiday will be declared till January 11.

2. Earlier on Sunday, the Jharkhand government also issued a notification to close both government and private schools for students from KG to class 7 in the state till January 14. “In view of the cold wave conditions, schools in Jharkhand will remain closed for students from KG to Standard 5 till January 14 and normal classes will resume from January 16,” the notification said.

3. The IMD on Monday issued a cold day and cold wave warning for Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh “A cold day to bitterly cold in Punjab, Haryana, UP; Cold wave to severe cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh”.

4. Meanwhile, the meteorological agency has also issued a fog warning for northwest India on Monday. IMD said “Dense to very dense fog over northwest India”.

5. At 5:30 am on Monday, the visibility recorded in Punjab was Bhatinda 0 meters, Amritsar 25 meters and Ambala 25 meters. Hissar saw a visibility of 50 meters. In Delhi’s Safdarjung, visibility was at 25 metres, while it was 50 meters in Palam. Agra and Lucknow saw visibility of 0 metres, while Varanasi saw 25 meters and Bareilly recorded 50 metres.

Visibility recorded at 5.30 am today at Baharaich-50 meters, Prayagraj-50 meters; Bihar: Bhagalpur – 25 meters, Purnea and Gaya – 50 meters each, Patna – 50 meters; North West Rajasthan: Ganganagar-25 metres,” the IMD added.

6. According to the reporters, 15 flights were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) due to persistent weather conditions, an official at the Delhi airport.

7. Around 29 trains are delayed in the Northern Railway region due to fog.

8. In its bulletin on Sunday, the IMD said that the cold wave conditions in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, West Madhya Pradesh and Telangana will disappear after January 9.
