British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on his first speech in 2023 amid economic crisis

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will set out his priorities for 2023 on Wednesday, using his first speech of the year to try to reassure his troubled Conservative Party that he has what it takes to lead them into the next national election.

After one failed attempt to become prime minister last year, Sunak succeeded her predecessor and former rival Liz Truss in October after just 44 days in office as markets rejected her unfunded tax cut plans. Since then he has faced a myriad of problems thousands of workers have gone on strike to protest pay, the health service is in crisis, inflation is hovering around 40 year highs and economists see Britain sliding into a long recession.

Wednesday’s speech will be as much a statement of intent as a response to critics who doubt whether the man who fell short of Truss in September’s Tory leadership race has what it takes to help the party win the next election. For Britain’s better future, Sunak, 42, will set out his long-term commitment to tackling issues such as low numeracy rates.

Rishi Sunak says “It’s personal to me. Every opportunity I’ve had in life has started with the education I’ve been lucky enough to get, setting out a new ambition to ensure all schoolchildren in England study some form of maths. age 18 years. And that is the single most important reason I entered politics: to give every child the highest possible standard of education. . . . With the right plan the right commitment to excellence I see no reason why we can’t compete with the best education systems in the world.”

Rishi Sunak highlighted his humble beginnings to counter those who criticize the former hedge fund partner’s wealth, is sure to go further to set out how he will achieve the goals he set on Twitter on New Year’s Eve & wanted people to feel proud of their country, to worry less about inflation, utility bills and public health services, and to trust justice, which he said could be achieved by fighting illegal migration.

The speech will not come too soon for those in his ruling Conservative Party, who see little chance of winning the next election, expected in 2024. With the opposition Labor party taking a strong lead in the polls, some Tory lawmakers and ministers have been calling on their leader to act for weeks, setting out his vision to try to pull Britain out of collapse.
