With Hardik Pandya impressing as India’s coach after his captaincy in IPL 2022 and then the Ireland-New Zealand T20I series, there is growing talk among cricketers and pundits that the all-rounder is the right choice to replace Rohit Sharma as the next captain of the Indian team. Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is backing the idea of Hardik taking over, but has added another name to the list of possible future captains by picking a somewhat unusual choice.
Hardik never aspired to become the next Indian captain. When Rohit was named captain earlier this year, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah were the names to replace Rohit in the future. But Hardik’s name suddenly appeared at the top of the list after he led Gujarat Titans to an impressive IPL title in his first ever captaincy in any tournament. He then led India to a 2-0 whitewash on the tour of Ireland before maintaining his winning streak in the New Zealand series earlier this month.
“Hardik Pandya is obviously in line,” Gambhir said at an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Sunday. “But that will be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in just one ICC event is probably not the right way to judge him. However, Gambhir feels that young Prithvi Shaw is also one of the possible options to lead the Indian side.
However, the batsman failed to be a permanent part of the Indian team while also being suspended for a doping violation in 2019 and facing fitness issues. In fact, he last played for India in July 2021, for the second string Indian side on the tour of Sri Lanka. “The reason I picked Prithvi Shaw, I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that’s the job of the coach and the selectors,” Gambhir said. “The job of the selectors is not just to pick 15, but also to get people to go the right way. “Prithvi Shaw is one that I think can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way you play the sport. Shaw has captaincy experience, most notably leading the Indian U-19 team to victory in the 2018 World Cup.
