National Investigation Agency is ready to take over the investigation into the Mangaluru blast case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is ready to take over the investigation into the Mangaluru blast case as directed by the Centre, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said in a statement on Friday. On November 19, an explosion in an autorickshaw was reported in Mangaluru, injuring the driver and a passenger, Mohammed Shariq (24), also the main accused in the case. In a statement, Jnanendra said the state recommended a probe into the bomb blast by the NIA, which the Union home ministry accepted and ordered the agency to start an investigation.

“In view of the incident that took place within the Kankanadi police station, the state government has decided to recommend an NIA investigation based on the evidence and other information gathered during the preliminary investigation,” the statement said.

In an order shared by Jnanendra’s office, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Vipul Alok said, “The Central Government is of the opinion that a scheduled offense under the NIA Act, 2008 has been committed, considering the gravity of the offense and its implications for national security , must be investigated by the NIA in accordance with the NIA Act, 2008.”

The order added, “Now, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the NIA Act, 2008, the Central Government hereby directs the NIA to initiate an investigation into the above case.” A senior police officer said that the Karnataka Police began work on handing over the case to the agency.
