Vladimir Putin discussed the price of Russian oil during a phone call with Mohammed Shia al-Sudani

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Western attempts to curb the price of Russian oil during a phone call with Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Iraq’s new prime minister, on Thursday, the Kremlin said in a readout of the call. It said Putin told Sudan that a price cap would have serious consequences for the global energy market.

“The attempts of a number of Western countries to impose restrictions on the price of oil from Russia have been affected,” the Kremlin said in a statement. “Vladimir Putin emphasized that such actions are contrary to the principles of market relations and are very likely to lead to serious consequences for the global energy market.”

The European Union and the United States have stepped up attempts in recent days to reach an agreement on where to set a price ceiling for their imports of Russian oil. Russia and Iraq are major oil producers and members of the OPEC+ agreement, which sets oil production levels in an attempt to control world prices.
