After the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched India’s first privately built rocket on Friday, the space agency conducted another test which it stressed “marks a significant milestone towards the implementation of the country’s ambitious Gaganyaan project“. It is the first project demonstrated by ISRO to demonstrate man’s ability to fly into space. The Integrated Main Parachute Landing Test – or IMAT – conducted in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh on Friday, simulates a case where the main parachute does not open.
how was it done The 5-tonne mock-up – which was said to be equivalent to the weight of the crew module – was dropped from 2.5 km using an Indian Air Force IL-76 aircraft. Then, two small pyrotechnic-based pilot parachutes deployed the main parachutes, the space agency said in a statement. This will come in handy when the astronauts return from space. “The fully inflated main parachutes reduced the payload speed to a safe landing speed and the payload mass landed softly on the ground in a sequence that lasted about 3 minutes,” he added.
This is the first in a series of tests planned to simulate various failure conditions for a human spaceflight mission. The parachute-based Deceleration system for Crew module is a joint venture between ISRO and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The Gaganyaan project aims to achieve space access autonomy and enhance the country’s cutting-edge scientific research capability through microgravity experiments on humans in the loop.
The step forward for the ambitious project comes as the space agency on Friday celebrated the entry of private players into the sector with the launch of Vikram-S, developed by Skyroot Aerospace. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the sector to private players in 2020, which the government hailed as a major reform. “Historic moment for India as Vikram-S rocket developed by Skyroot Aerospace launched from Sriharikota today! It is an important milestone in the journey of India’s private space industry. Congratulations to @isro & @INSPACeIND for making this feat possible,” PM Modi tweeted on Friday.
