Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday stressed the need for no restrictions on energy supplies and called for stability, while reiterating a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict. Addressing the G-20 summit here, Modi said climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic, developments in Ukraine and related global issues have created turmoil in the world as global supply chains are in “ruins”. The prime minister’s call for no restrictions on energy supplies came amid Western calls against buying Russian oil and gas in view of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“India’s energy security is also important for global growth as it is the world’s fastest growing economy. We must not enforce any restrictions on energy supply and stability in the energy market should be ensured,” Modi said at a meeting on food and energy security, which was also attended by world leaders such as US President Joe Biden and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. on behalf of President Vladimir Putin. He said India is committed to clean energy and environment.
“By 2030, half of our electricity will be produced from renewable sources. Time-bound and affordable finance and sustainable technology delivery to developing countries are essential for an inclusive energy transition,” he added at the summit held in this Indonesian city. The Prime Minister also praised Indonesia for its G20 leadership in a challenging global environment. “Climate change, the Covid pandemic, developments in Ukraine and the global problems associated with it. All of this together caused confusion in the world. Global supply chains are in shambles,” Modi said.
“All over the world there is a crisis of basic things, basic goods. The challenge for the poor citizens of every country is more serious. Everyday life was already a struggle for them,” he said. The Prime Minister said the poor do not have the financial capacity to deal with the ‘double whammy.’ We should also not hesitate to acknowledge that multilateral institutions such as the UN have failed on these issues,” he said.
“And we all failed to make appropriate reforms in them. Therefore, today the world has greater expectations from the G-20, the importance of our group has become more significant,” he added. On the Ukrainian conflict, he pointed to his repeated call to resolve the crisis through talks. “I have repeatedly said that we must find a way to return to the path of ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine. During the last century, World War II wreaked havoc on the world,” he said.
“After that, the leaders of the time seriously tried to take the path of peace. Now it’s our turn. The burden of creating a new world order for the post-Covid era rests on our shoulders,” he noted. The Prime Minister said the need of the hour was to show “concrete and collective determination” to ensure peace, harmony and security in the world. “I am sure that next year, when the G20 meets in the holy land of Buddha and Gandhi, we will all agree to deliver a strong message of peace to the world,” he said. The G20 consists of 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA and European union (EU).
