Three Australian telecommunications firms have been ordered by a court to pay collective fines of A$33.5 million

Three Australian telecommunications firms have been ordered by a court to pay collective fines of A$33.5 million ($22.08 million) for making misleading claims about the speeds of some NBN internet plans, the country’s competition regulator said on Friday. The Australian Federal Court ordered Telstra to pay A$15 million to TPG Telecom unit to cough up A$5 million and fined Optus, the Singaporean telecom arm, A$13.5 million to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). ) said.

All three telcos admitted in court to making false or misleading statements, the regulator said, noting that nearly 120,000 customers were affected. According to the ACCC, false or misleading statements were made for at least 12 months in 2019, and possibly extending into 2020, in relation to their 50 megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps fiber to the node plans. The NBN, or National Broadband Network, is the government’s broadband network. Telstra, TPG and Optus did not immediately respond to the sources’ requests for comment.
