The Congress party criticized BJP  for using the lotus in the official logo of India’s G20 presidency

The Congress party on Wednesday criticized the BJP-led Union government for using the lotus in the official logo of India’s G20 presidency. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress’ general secretary in charge of communications, said India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru rejected a proposal to make the party’s official flag the national flag, but “the BJP loses no opportunity to shamelessly promote itself”. “More than 70 years ago, Nehru rejected the proposal to make Congress the flag of India. Now the election symbol of BJP has become the official logo of India’s G20 Presidency! Shocking as it is, we already know that Mr. Modi & BJP will miss no opportunity to shamelessly promote themselves!” Ramesh said in a tweet.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled India’s logo, theme and website for its presidency of the G20, an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. The G20 logo draws inspiration from the vibrant colors of India’s national flag and, according to an official statement, places planet Earth alongside the lotus, India’s national flower, which reflects growth amid challenges. The land reflects India’s pro-planetary approach to life, which is in perfect harmony with nature. Below the G20 logo is ‘Bharat’ written in Devanagari script,” the statement said.

What did PM Modi say about the logo?

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the lotus in the logo symbolizes India’s ancient heritage, faith and thought. He noted that India’s chairmanship of the G-20 comes at a time of crisis and chaos, when the world is dealing with the aftermath of a devastating once-in-a-century global pandemic, with conflicts and a lot of economic uncertainty.“The lotus symbol in the G20 logo is a representation of hope in these times. No matter how adverse the circumstances, the lotus still blooms.”

“In Indian culture, the goddess of knowledge and prosperity sits on a lotus. This is what the world needs most today. Shared knowledge that helps us overcome our circumstances and shared prosperity that reaches the last person in the last mile. This is why the earth is also placed on the lotus. The seven petals on the lotus in the logo are also significant. It represents the seven continents. Seven is also the number of notes in the universal musical language. In music, when the seven notes come together, they create a perfect harmony,” added PM Modi.
