Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India

Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. President Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After completing the oath, Chandrachud became the 50th CHI succeeding Justice UU Lalita who recommended Chandrachud’s name. Justice Chandrachud will have a tenure till November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud is the second senior most judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Chandrachud, born on 11 November 1959, was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on 13 May 2016. His father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India serving from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. Justice Chandrachud was from 31 October 2013 until his appointment to the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He was a Judge of the Bombay High Court from 29 March 2000 until his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Chandrachud also served as the Additional Attorney General of India from 1998 until his appointment as a Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was designated as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998. On Monday, Justice Chandrachud said he had very big shoes to fill and said he hoped to continue the good work started by UU Lalit. “Personally, as your successor, I am aware that I have very big shoes to fill as you have really raised the bar of the Chief Justice,” Justice Chandrachud said at UU Lalit’s farewell function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association.On the other hand, Justice Chandrachud gave landmark judgments, including decriminalization of Section 377, on Aadhaar, Sabarimala etc. Recently, a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud allowed unmarried women to have medical termination of pregnancy.
