Indian patients infected with Omicron sub-lineage XBB COVID-19 have mild disease

Indian patients infected with Omicron sub-lineage XBB COVID-19 have mild disease and no increase in severity, INSACOG said. The expert panel said that the XBB variant has been detected in several states in the country. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said in a statement that it is closely following and monitoring the emergence and evolution of XBB and XBB.1 and any new subgroups. “There is no need for the community to panic and in light of the ongoing festivities, appropriate behavior regarding the coronavirus is advised,” it said.

Among Indian patients, the disease is mild as in other Omicron sublines and no increase in severity is noted, the panel said. At the current stage of the pandemic, INSACOG said the SARS-CoV-2 virus is constantly accumulating mutations, some of which may contribute to increased transmissibility and immune evasion, resulting in a transmission advantage over other variants.

“XBB, a BJ.1/BM.1.1.1 recombinant line with a spike protein breakpoint, is currently emerging in many countries. This recombinant lineage was first detected in Singapore and the US and has also been identified in several states in India,” it said. An XBB subline with an additional mutation (XBB.1) is also detected. “A slight increase in the spread of XBB in Singapore has been observed. However, no increase in disease severity or increase in hospitalization associated with these variants has been reported,” he added.
