The MHA’s 800-page gazette notification said the number of wards in Delhi will now be 250

A day after the Delimitation Commission submitted its report to the Centre, the Home Ministry on Tuesday issued a final gazette notification on the redrawing of Delhi’s wards, paving the way for civic polls in the city. The MHA’s 800-page gazette notification said the number of wards in Delhi will now be 250. There used to be 272 wards before the reunification of the city’s municipal corporations.

Municipal elections have been held in the city since April this year. The BJP, which ruled the three municipal corporations of Delhi for more than a decade before their reunification, the AAP and the Congress have already started preparations for the polls. The Delimitation Commission on Monday submitted its final report to the Center on the redrawing of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards, official sources said.

According to civic officials, after the gazette notification, the delimitation exercise should be taken as complete. In July this year, the home ministry set up a three-member panel for delimitation of urban areas in Delhi. The delimitation exercise in Delhi was last conducted in 2016 and the number of wards was kept at 272, each having an average population of 60,000 subject to a variation of 10 to 15 per cent. Municipal elections were to be held in Delhi this April. They were suspended hours before Delhi State Election Commissioner S K Srivastava was to announce the schedule on March 8 due to the Centre’s plan to re-merge the three civic bodies.
