Indo-Russian joint venture that makes nuclear-capable supersonic cruise missiles hopes to win $5 billion

An Indo-Russian joint venture that makes nuclear-capable supersonic cruise missiles hopes to win $5 billion in contracts by 2025, its chairman said on Tuesday as he signed its first $375 million export deal with the Philippines this year. BrahMos Aerospace is in talks with Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam for new orders. The joint venture, with a 50.5% Indian and 49.5% Russian partnership, fits into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship make-in-India programme.

India produced Russian MiG fighter jets and Su-30 jets under license and both cooperated in the production of BrahMos missiles in India. Russia has also traditionally been a major arms supplier to India. In April last year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the two countries were discussing “additional” production of Russian military equipment in India.

India, which has not explicitly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, also became Moscow’s second-biggest buyer of oil after China as Indian refiners bought discounted Russian crude that some Western buyers shunned. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a target of achieving $5 billion (of defense exports) by 2025. I hope that BrahMos alone will be able to achieve the target of $5 billion by 2025,” Rane said. The Indian Defense Forces currently use the BrahMos supersonic surface-to-surface missile, which can be launched from land, sea and submarine platforms.
