Judge’s role is not to please people but to decide cases according to law said by Hemant Gupta

A judge’s role is not to please people but to decide cases according to law, Justice Hemant Gupta said on Friday while bidding farewell to the Supreme Court. Justice Gupta relinquished office on October 16 after nearly four years at the apex court. His last day of work was Friday.

In his farewell speech at an event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Gupta said, “A judge cannot make people happy… that is not the role assigned to him. This role is assigned to other people in public life. This role cannot be performed with the intention of pleasing people. In court I was tough, blunt. But all the orders that I understand were justified were approved.”

According to Justice Gupta, he hung up his boots with inner satisfaction that he could give the best to the institute. “I have no regrets. I have tried my best to fulfill my duties with utmost humility and sincerity, even if I sometimes lose my cool. No one is perfect. I can have no claim to perfection. In my shortcomings, when I made a mistake, it was unintentional.” he added.
