3 more bodies found, death toll rises to 19 at Uttarkashi avalanche

Three more bodies were recovered from the place where the avalanche fell, bringing the death toll to 19, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering said on Friday. Two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters took off from Harsil in Uttarakhand to help in search operations, officials said. The avalanche occurred at a height of 17,000 feet on Tuesday when a Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) team was returning after scaling the Draupadi Ka Danda II peak.

Three more bodies were recovered from the avalanche site late Thursday night, bringing the total number of bodies recovered so far to 19, NIM said. While 17 of these bodies are practicing climbers, two are their instructors, he said. According to NIM, 10 trainees are still missing. Army, IAF, NIM, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, School of High Altitude Warfare (Jammu and Kashmir) and State Disaster Response Force along with the district administration are carrying out search operations which began hours after the avalanche hit on Tuesday . The climbers who went missing after the avalanche were part of a team selected by NIM for an advanced training course.
