Narendra Modi told Volodymyr Zelensky that his country is ready to contribute to peace efforts

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday that his country is ready to contribute to peace efforts in the ongoing conflict with Russia, which has raged for seven months. “He expressed his firm belief that there can be no military solution to the conflict and expressed India’s willingness to contribute to any peace effort,” the Indian prime minister’s office said in a statement after the phone conversation between Modi and Zelensky.

India is articulating its stance against the war in Ukraine more forcefully to counter criticism that it is soft on Russia but has still not held Moscow responsible for the invasion or changed its policy of importing cheap Russian oil and coal. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. “The Prime Minister emphasized the importance India attaches to the safety and security of nuclear facilities, including Ukraine,” the statement said.
