Mulugu, Telangana: Early Monday morning, residents of Mulugu in Telangana were startled by what they initially thought was the work of mischievous monkeys. However, as walls began to shake and utensils clattered, it became clear that the region was experiencing a 5.3 magnitude earthquake.
The quake, one of the strongest recorded in the area in 55 years, caused tremors that rippled across parts of central and northern India.
Residents Share Their Experiences
A. Mangamma, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife from SS Tadvai, recalled, “I was sorting things at home when the vessels and cot started shaking. At first, I blamed the monkeys, but when the walls trembled too, I froze in confusion. It lasted about a minute.”
Similarly, A. Trishul, lying on his bed during the quake, mistook the monkeys’ screeching for a fight on his roof. “I realized it was something bigger when the vibrations intensified. A quick call to friends confirmed it was an earthquake,” he shared.
In Nallabelli village, 86-year-old Munigala Sudarshan Reddy witnessed his chair and table shaking. In Hanamkonda, Ramachandram initially thought his trembling body signaled a health issue until news reports clarified the situation.
A 53-year-old resident of Kothagudem reported being jolted awake from his sleep by the quake’s vibrations.
Impact and Observations
The tremors were felt across the erstwhile Warangal district and neighboring areas, though there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. Residents described the earthquake as a rare and startling experience.
Experts classify the quake as moderate but emphasize its significance due to its strength and unusual occurrence in the region.
This seismic event has reminded many of the importance of earthquake preparedness, even in areas not commonly associated with such activity.
