Whale Songs Reveal Changing Ocean Ecosystem in Groundbreaking Study

Humpback, blue, and fin whales create a mesmerizing symphony beneath the ocean’s surface, their songs resonating across vast distances. But beyond their beauty, these songs are also powerful indicators of changes in marine ecosystems. A new study published in PLOS One reveals how whale songs reflect fluctuations in food availability and environmental conditions, offering scientists a novel way to track ocean health.

Whales, Migration, and Foraging Challenges
The six-year study focused on whale populations in the eastern North Pacific, off the coast of California. Each year, these marine giants travel thousands of kilometers to breeding grounds, surviving on energy stored from their foraging season. While humpback whales consume both krill and small schooling fish like anchovies, blue whales exclusively feed on krill, making them particularly vulnerable to shifts in prey availability.

By analyzing sound recordings from the Monterey Accelerated Research System, a deep-sea observatory, researchers uncovered a remarkable link between whale songs and food abundance. The study also used photo identification, diet analysis, and ecosystem modeling to piece together a complex picture of whale behavior.

Whale Songs Decline During Food Shortages
The research began in 2015, amid a marine heatwave that disrupted the whales’ foraging habitat. During this period, all three species sang significantly less. As ocean conditions improved and prey became more abundant over the next two years, the frequency of their songs increased.

The study found that humpback whales, which can adapt their diet to include fish, continued singing at high rates in later years when anchovy populations surged marking their largest increase in 50 years. In contrast, blue whales, reliant solely on krill, sang less when krill numbers declined. Skin analysis of blue whales suggested they had to travel farther to find food, a sign of increasing strain on their foraging patterns.

A New Tool for Tracking Ocean Changes
These findings reveal that whale songs serve as real-time indicators of marine ecosystem shifts. Humpback whales appear particularly resilient, able to adjust their diet and behavior in response to food scarcity. However, blue whales may be more vulnerable to environmental changes due to their specialized diet.

Listening to whales provides scientists with a non-invasive way to monitor marine ecosystems, helping predict long-term trends driven by climate change. As oceans undergo unprecedented transformations, interdisciplinary research and collaboration will be essential to understanding the impacts on marine life.

This study, made possible by partnerships between private research centers, universities, and federal agencies, highlights the power of acoustic monitoring in uncovering the hidden dynamics of the ocean.
