Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has questioned the BJP-led Delhi government for failing to approve its promised ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance scheme for women in its first cabinet meeting on Thursday.
In a letter to newly sworn-in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Atishi reminded her of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pre-election guarantee and sought a meeting with the AAP Legislature Party on Sunday to discuss the scheme’s implementation.
“On January 31, 2025, during the election campaign, PM Modi had assured women that the BJP would approve a ₹2,500 per month scheme in its first cabinet meeting,” Atishi wrote. “But after the government was formed, the scheme was missing from the agenda, leaving women feeling cheated.”
She urged Ms Gupta to clarify when the promised funds would reach beneficiaries and accused the BJP of betraying public trust.
Atishi defeated BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri in the Kalkaji assembly seat, has kept up the attack, displaying campaign posters featuring PM Modi and CM Gupta to demand answers. She asked whether the scheme was just another election gimmick.
AAP, which lost power to the BJP on February 8, has vowed to ensure that the ₹2,500 aid, 300 units of free electricity, and other welfare schemes are delivered as promised.
On February 20, the BJP government approved the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, discussed the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, and decided to table 14 pending CAG reports in the assembly session starting Monday.
Despite its 48-seat majority, BJP is now under growing opposition pressure to deliver on its election commitments, especially regarding financial support for women, which was a key poll issue in the February 5 elections.
