Rekha Gupta a first time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as the new chief minister of Delhi on Thursday at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Ground. Lt. Governor VK Saxena administered the oath, making Gupta the fourth woman to hold Delhi’s top post, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
Gupta’s rise marks a historic moment for the BJP, which has returned to power in Delhi after 27 years. The party secured 48 out of 70 seats in the legislative assembly, forming a majority government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Gupta on social media, praising her journey from grassroots politics to becoming chief minister. “I am confident she will work for Delhi’s development with full vigor. My best wishes to her for a fruitful tenure,” Modi posted on X.
Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik also extended his congratulations, expressing hope for Delhi’s continued development under Gupta’s leadership.
Gupta later joined other NDA chief ministers for a meeting with BJP leadership at The Imperial Hotel in New Delhi, signaling a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape.
