Kulgam, Dec 19 – In a joint operation between the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, five terrorists were neutralized on Thursday in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The encounter began in the Kadder area following intelligence inputs about the presence of armed militants.
As the security forces launched a search operation, the terrorists opened heavy fire, prompting a retaliatory strike. “Based on specific intelligence input, a joint operation was launched. Vigilant troops observed suspicious activity, and on being challenged, terrorists resorted to indiscriminate firing,” the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The operation remains ongoing as security forces secure the area.
This encounter follows a series of recent anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier this month, a terrorist involved in civilian killings in Ganderbal and multiple attacks was gunned down in Srinagar.
In November, three terrorists were eliminated in separate encounters in Anantnag and Khanyar districts. October witnessed one of the deadliest attacks, where seven individuals, including a local doctor and two laborers from Bihar, were killed by terrorists at a tunnel construction site in Ganderbal district.
National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah expressed concerns about the surge in terror incidents, suggesting they might be an attempt to destabilize the newly formed government led by his son, Omar Abdullah. He called for an independent probe into the incidents, emphasizing the need for accountability and stability in the region.
As security forces continue their operations, the government reiterates its commitment to maintaining peace and eliminating threats in the region.
