Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced strong support for India’s inclusion among global superpowers, citing its rapidly growing economy, massive population, and potential for future growth. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin praised India as a “great country” with ancient cultural roots and unmatched economic momentum.
“India should undoubtedly be added to the list of superpowers,” Putin remarked, emphasizing India’s billion-plus population and dynamic economy, currently growing faster than any other worldwide. He also highlighted the deepening partnership between Russia and India across various sectors, noting that bilateral cooperation is expanding every year.
Putin pointed to robust military ties as a sign of mutual trust, emphasizing that Russia not only supplies arms to India but also collaborates on joint projects. He mentioned the BrahMos missile project as an example of high-level defense cooperation, underscoring Russia’s commitment to strengthening India’s security. “We design our weapons jointly,” he said, noting that the BrahMos missile has been developed for use across multiple environments, including air, sea, and land.
Acknowledging recent challenges along India’s border with China, Putin expressed optimism about resolution efforts. He credited both countries’ leadership for their commitment to diplomacy and their people’s future, stating, “Wise and competent people are searching for compromises and will eventually find them.”
This endorsement from Russia’s leader comes amid recent progress in de-escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. India and China recently reached an agreement on troop disengagement after prolonged negotiations, marking a breakthrough to end the standoff that began in 2020.
Putin’s statements highlight Russia’s strong support for India’s global role, especially as the two countries continue to expand cooperation in defense, security, and economic development.
