Technology Focus: What is augmented Reality and how it is different from Virtual Reality and its Application on various field

Augmented reality and virtual reality are important concepts in an increasingly digital world. Although these are two different technologies, the two terms are often used interchangeably. But what are the differences and similarities between AR and VR?

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality (AR) combines the digital world with real elements. It is a technology that is equally suitable for mobile devices and desktop computers. What’s special is the fact that it offers the ability to mirror digital components in the real world.

What is virtual Reality?

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of an alternate world or reality. It is used in 3D movies and video games. It helps create simulations similar to the real world and “immerse” the viewer using computers and sensory devices such as headsets and gloves. In addition to games and entertainment, virtual reality is also used for training, education and science. The full form of VR is virtual reality

How does augmented reality (AR) work?

One difference between VR and AR is that AR displays different content in the real world. Computer vision, depth sensing and mapping play a key role in this process. All data can be collected in real time, for example using cameras, and processed directly. This allows digital content to be displayed whenever the user needs it. Special equipment is required to take full advantage of AR features. For example, Smart Glasses that provide data via Smart Glasses software are often used.

How does VR work?

Virtual reality focuses on simulating vision. The user must put the screen of the VR headset in front of their eyes. This eliminates any interaction with the real world. In VR, two lenses are placed between the screen. The user needs to adjust the eyes based on individual eye movement and position. The image on the screen can be rendered using an HDMI cable connected to a computer or mobile phone.

It uses glasses, speakers, and sometimes handheld devices to simulate a real-world experience. In virtual reality, you can also use visual, auditory and tactile (touch) stimulation, so that the created reality is immersive.

Differences between VR and AR

• AR uses a real world setting while VR is completely virtual

• AR users can control their presence in the real world; VR users are controlled by the system

• VR requires a headset, but AR can be accessed using a smartphone

• AR enhances both the virtual and the real world, while VR only enhances the fictional reality.

Augmented Reality (AR) Applications

Here are the important applications of AR technology:

• AR apps are being developed that embed text, images, videos, etc.

• The print and advertising industries are using AR technology applications to display digital content over real magazines.

• AR technology enables the development of translation applications to help you interpret text in other languages.

• With the help of Unity 3d Engine, AR is used to develop real-time 3D games.

• The fading of digital content from actual magazines is already working well in the print and advertising industries.

• Users who want to translate texts into other languages can use modern translation applications thanks to AR technology.

• Augmented reality in construction and logistics is an attractive way to increase the efficiency of employees and business processes.

• Augmented reality is an easy way to get in touch with customers, colleagues or technicians.

Virtual reality (VR) applications

Here are the important VR applications:

• VR technology is used to create and enhance a fictional reality for the game world.

• VR can be used by the military for flight simulations, battle simulations, etc.

• VR is used as a digital training device in many sports to help measure an athlete’s performance and analyze their techniques.

• It is also becoming the primary method of treating post-traumatic stress.

• Using VR devices such as Google Cardboard, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or users can be transported to the real world as well as imaginary environments such as a squawking colony of penguins or even the back of a dragon.

• VR technology offers patients a safe environment to come into contact with the things they fear.

• Medical students use VR for practice and procedures

• Virtual patients are used to help students develop skills that can later be applied in the real world.
