Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who recently faced disappointment at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is now set to make her political debut after joining the Congress party. Vinesh was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final for being overweight, which led to her decision to retire from the sport. Following her return, she has filed her nomination for the upcoming Haryana elections and will be contesting from the Julana Constituency in Jind.
In her election affidavit, Vinesh provided insights into her assets and income. According to the declaration, Vinesh owns three cars: a Volvo XC 60 valued at ₹35 lakh, a Hyundai Creta valued at ₹12 lakh, and a Toyota Innova worth ₹17 lakh. The affidavit also mentioned that she is currently repaying a loan related to one of her cars.
When it comes to immovable property, her assets are valued at ₹2 crore. She also disclosed that she has ₹1.95 lakh in hand, and her Income Tax returns for the financial year 2023-24 reported an income of ₹13,85,000.
Meanwhile, Mahavir Singh Phogat, Vinesh’s uncle and former wrestling coach, has shared that his daughter, Sangeeta Phogat, will now carry forward the family’s Olympic dreams. Mahavir stated that they have begun preparing Sangeeta for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he hopes she will bring a medal for India.
Last Friday, Vinesh Phogat, along with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, joined the Congress. This marks the beginning of Vinesh’s electoral journey, and she will contest from the Julana constituency in Jind district.
Mahavir Phogat added, “Vinesh should have competed in the LA Olympics, but now that she has entered politics, Sangeeta Phogat will be our hope for the 2028 Games.”
