The death toll has risen to 32 after a deadly tornado struck the southern United States

Deaths have been confirmed across a wide swath of states, with several deaths reported in Arkansas, Indiana and Tennessee, where the national death toll rose to 15 on Sunday, officials said.

The death toll from devastating and destructive tornadoes that have ravaged the American South and Midwest has risen to 32, while parts of the Southern Plains braced for the possibility of their own round of severe weather.

The storm that tore into American homes arrived on Friday and has so far crushed homes and businesses, torn roofs off buildings, snapped trees and sent vehicles flying.

Following reports of multiple tornadoes in Arkansas, the governor declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon after officials said one person was killed in North Little Rock and two died in Wynne. A state of emergency was declared in Missouri in response to the severe weather, CNN reported.

One person was killed and 28 others were hospitalized Friday night in northern Illinois after the roof collapsed at a Belvidere theater with 260 people inside, Fire Chief Shawn Schadle said, the New York Times reported.

About 150 miles east of Sherman, in Sullivan Country, Ind., three people were also killed after a tornado touched down, according to Sgt. Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police.

In addition to Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee, tornadoes were reported to the National Weather Service in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Mississippi. As the storm system moved east early Saturday, a tornado warning remained in place for parts of Alabama and Georgia, according to the National Weather Service.

The overnight tornado that makes people most prone to extensive damage flattened much of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, with maximum winds estimated at 170 mph.

President Biden visited Rolling Fork, the Mississippi community hardest hit by last week’s tornadoes, on Friday. The tornado killed 13 people and destroyed homes and businesses in Rolling Fork and surrounding Sharkey County.
