Ahead of the next UN climate summit to be held in Egypt next month, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar – who is in the country – has expressed concern over climate change, the effects of which have been seen in many parts of the world, including the Indian subcontinent. “Look at the summer Europe has had today. In the Indian subcontinent, we are witnessing floods, cold and heat on a scale that we have never seen before,” he said while addressing an India-Egypt business forum on Sunday.
“The urgency with which the climate emergency needs to be addressed grows with each COP (Conference of the Parties) summit. And sustainable solutions will not only come from conferences… only from politics. These principles would have to be implemented by businesses,” he further stated.
“Many reputable Indian companies are coming to a destination like Egypt and are positive about the opportunities there. I think that says a lot about our companies and your credibility as an investment destination. I really see a world of possibilities here. Today, Indian companies are implementing projects all over the world, which they would not have done 10 years ago,” he emphasized.
The foreign minister also spoke about his interaction with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, where the conversation revolved around the $7.2 billion trade turnover between the two countries. “President Sisi told me he doesn’t think it’s enough.” He urged us and said to find ways to increase it. I know this is also the mindset of our Prime Minister,” Jaishankar said.
Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar shared pictures of his meeting with the Egyptian president. “Conveyed warm greetings to PM @narendramodi and conveyed a personal message,” the post read. “As independent-minded nations, India and Egypt contribute to the global discourse. And support the cause of peace, progress and development,” he wrote. “India appreciates Egypt’s participation in the G20 during its chairmanship. We are fully committed to the success of COP27 under Egyptian chairmanship.”
