The White House said Ukrainian forces were sensing momentum against Russia

The White House said Ukrainian forces were sensing momentum against Russia, but warned that the ongoing war in Ukraine remains “unpredictable.” We watched closely. The events in the north are more dramatic than what we saw in the south. I would leave it to President Volodymyr Zelensky to determine and decide whether militarily they feel they have reached a tipping point. But it’s clear that, at least in Donbas, Ukrainian armed forces are feeling the momentum here, John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council strategic communications coordinator, said Tuesday.

In response to questions, Kirby said that in the north they saw the Russians evacuating, withdrawing and retreating from their defensive positions, particularly in and around the Kharkiv region. They left their fighting positions. They left supplies, he said. They call it a redeployment, but it is certain that they have withdrawn in the face of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who are apparently on the offensive. Obviously, these are some dramatic events that we’re watching, but this is war, and war is unpredictable. And I think we’re going to watch it as closely as we can, but it’s really the Ukrainian armed forces that  that they should be talking to about the progress that they’re making, he said.

Describing it as a dynamic situation, Kirby said it remains to be seen what their next steps will be as the Ukrainians remain on the offensive up north and continue their counter-offensive down south. They were attacked. They have the right to defend their country and their territorial integrity, and that means going to crime, he argued. It doesn’t just mean fighting back. It is important to remember that from the beginning, even in February, in March, the Ukrainians were still in attack and defense in this war, he noted.

Last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Milley said Milley attended the fifth meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine at Ramstein Air Force Base along with defense leaders from nearly 50 countries around the world. Austin emphasized that these international leaders entered the meeting with great momentum and concluded the session even more united and determined to continue their shared support for Ukraine’s right to defense.

During the meeting, Austin also announced the authorization of a presidential withdrawal of up to $675 million in security assistance to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs, bringing the total amount of U.S. security assistance since 2014 to $17.2 billion. Ukraine continues to use this assistance and assistance provided by other international partners to great effect on the battlefield in their fight to defend their country, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder told reporters at a separate news conference.

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ryder said they’ve seen the Ukrainians show remarkable adaptability in their ability to use their combat capabilities to great effect, so it’s not surprising that they came through as quickly as they did. They have also again demonstrated a remarkable ability to take advantage of opportunities presented on the battlefield, and the current counteroffensive in Kharkiv is no exception, he said.

Ryder refrained from answering a question about what Russia might do next, saying they had demonstrated their intent to continue fighting in Ukraine and extend their illegal occupation. From our side, of course, we will continue to monitor the situation and continue to focus on working with the Ukrainians and the international community to provide them with the support they need, he said. But I emphasize that President Vladimir Putin could ease the situation tomorrow by withdrawing Russian forces, but until that happens, we will continue to stand behind Ukraine, he said.

State Department spokesman Ned Price told that the U.S. has always said that this conflict, this war, Russia’s war against Ukraine is not going to be linear in terms of territorial gains. But we believe we have set our Ukrainian partners on the path to help them ensure the effective defense of their country. We saw it in the early days. We have seen this in recent days, he said.

President Putin and his cronies did everything they could to prevent this information from reaching the Russian people in the first place, to feed the Russian people a steady diet of lies and disinformation in an attempt to hide the true costs of this war, Price argued. There was also the lower level discussion and dialogue you point to in Russia. Unfortunately, it is a system that is largely controlled by one individual, and that individual is surrounded not by democratically elected acolytes, but by individuals who have in many ways created safeguards against public opinion, in some cases even reaching the inner sanctum of the Kremlin, Price said.
