Turkey-Syria earthquake LIVE updates: 5.6 earthquake, emergency teams search for people in destroyed building

The death toll in Turkey and neighboring northwestern Syria has risen to more than 4,000 after a major earthquake, the Associated Press reported. As rescue operations continued, freezing winter weather hampered the overnight search for survivors. Temperatures fell near freezing overnight, worsening conditions for people trapped under rubble or left homeless, Reuters reported. The earthquake, which was followed by a series of aftershocks, was the largest recorded globally by the US Geological Survey since the August 2021 quake in the remote South Atlantic.
