Millions of Americans turned out on Tuesday to cast their votes in the historic 2024 U.S. presidential election, with early projections showing a tight race between Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump. Trump who aims to reclaim the presidency, currently leads in 10 states, including the crucial battleground of Florida, while Harris has secured five states in the eastern region.
The former president holds an early advantage with 101 electoral votes, as Harris follows with 71. Both candidates are vying for the crucial 270 electoral college votes needed to secure the presidency.
According to NBC exit polls, Harris, 60, appears to have a slight edge in national favorability, with 48% of voters viewing her positively, while Trump has garnered support from 44% of voters. The poll revealed that “democracy” and “economy” are top concerns for voters, with 34% prioritizing democracy and 31% focusing on economic issues. Other significant factors included abortion (14%) and immigration (11%), while foreign policy was highlighted by 4% of voters.
However, public sentiment remains tense, reporting that three-quarters of Americans are dissatisfied with the current state of the nation. Only a small fraction of voters expressed enthusiasm, while a larger portion reported feeling frustrated or angry about the country’s direction.
This election could be groundbreaking for several reasons. If Harris wins, she would make history as the first female, Black, and South Asian American president. Meanwhile, Trump, 78, could achieve a rare comeback, making him the first U.S. president in over a century to serve non-consecutive terms.
With exit polls still rolling in and results far from finalized, the country watches as the high-stakes race for the White House unfolds, setting the stage for potentially unprecedented outcomes in American politics.
